Fisher Price Dolls House - A History of Dolls Houses
Dolls houses have been around since ancient times. Yes, dolls houses have been found as long as five thousand years ago in the pyramids. The dolls houses there were nothing like the ones we have today of course. They were made of wood and they had little wooden figures of servants and animals, both livestock and domestic kinds. It is thought they were used for some kind of ceremonial religious purposes.
In the 16th Century doll houses were the perogative of the very wealthy. They had custom made dolls houses which had many rooms, and tiny pieces of furniture in too. They were aspirational houses which made people understand what they wanted to own, not just what they did own. Although these houses were ornamental, in fact, kept in glass cases to display, they were still worth a great deal of money. One estimate suggests that one of these dolls houses would cost as much as an ordinary house!
These highly sought after dolls houses became more commonplace as time went on. After World War Two there were many advances in manufacturing and eventually the dolls houses became so cheap that any little girl might be able to own one. They were usually made of metal with plastic dolls and furniture. If a child had a talented parent or grandparent, they sometimes were made a dolls house of wood.
Nowadays of course, there are many dolls houses available. Dolls houses are a great way for children to express themselves, and to learn about life and their own environment. Dolls houses come in beautiful styles with fabulous accessories and reflect our own cultures those of others around us.
